Tuchel has plan for Chelsea nomad as loan deal with caveat likely
Trevoh Chalobah looks set for another loan spell away from Chelsea, with many clubs keen to land the versatile youngster this summer.
The 22-year-old has been with the Blues since 2007. Born in Sierra Leone, he moved to England at a young age and spent 11 years in the Chelsea youth setup. Although the former England Under-21 ace has penned four professional contracts at Stamford Bridge, he is yet to make a senior appearance.
Successive managers have opted to send him out on loan. He spent the 2018-2019 campaign with Ipswich Town, making 43 Championship appearances.
The defensive midfielder was back in the second tier the follow season, with 36 outings for Huddersfield Town. He was then given a taste of top-flight football, penning a season-long loan with Ligue 1 outfit Lorient last term.
The Freetown-born star impressed in France and has been earning rave reviews in pre-season for Chelsea. But Thomas Tuchel has been using him as central defender in friendlies.
The boss was full of praise for the way Chalobah has adapted but admits it will be tough to find him game time.
“We know him from Lorient and Chalo has done very well in pre-season,” he said after last week’s pre-season draw with Tottenham. “We wanted to continue in the back three, so there was space in the back until [Kurt] Zouma and Toni [Rudiger] arrived.
“Then there was one space left but then Andreas Christensen, Reece [James] and Azpi [Cesar Azpilicueta] are back then there is a huge competition for him. He’s done very well in both games and within his potential and limits that was nice to see.”
Tuchel keen for Chalobah to continue in defence
Many clubs have made it clear they would love to take Chalobah on loan for 2021-2022. Crystal Palace, Watford, West Brom and Montpellier are said to be among his suitors.
It was reported by French outlet L’Equipe that new Eagles chief Patrick Vieira is a big fan. But Chelsea are keen for the youngster to continue in a defensive role, per football.london.
It is not known if Vieira has that position in mind for the Chelsea starlet. There is also an issue with the fact Palace have already signed Conor Gallagher on loan from Chelsea.
Therefore it would need to be a permanent deal for Chalobah and that does not seem in the Blues’ thinking.
