Trusted source confirms Bielsa liking of target, but questions Leeds transfer chances

Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa remains an admirer of Reading midfielder John Swift – but a trusted source has cast some doubts over whether a move will be made in the January window.

The Whites have struggled during their second season back in the Premier League. While performances of late have been significantly better, they still have just two wins from their 12 games so far. Those results leave Leeds teetering just above the relegation zone heading into this weekend’s fixtures.

With the January window approaching, director of football Victor Orta is starting to shape plans to strengthen Leeds’ options.

That said, Bielsa has been quick to play down the likelihood of Leeds doing any business.

One area they are keen to bolster is the central midfield. While Adam Forshaw has made a welcome return from a two-year hip problem, there are concerns they do remain light in that area.

As such, a number of names have been linked, including Reading star Swift.

The 26-year-old has been an influential figure for the Royals already this campaign. With eight goals and eight assists to his name in 19 appearances, it’s easy to see why he’s a man in demand. As such, it’s little surprise to see the talisman attracting a huge amount of interest from teams both in the Premier League and the Championship.

The Athletic’s Leeds writer Phil Hay confirms Bielsa remains a big admirer of Swift’s talents.

However, with finances tight at Elland Road – and with the club unsure whether he can improve what they already have – Hay is unsure if a move will go ahead.

“Bielsa has liked Swift for a while,” Hay writes. “It’s a difficult question because deep down you question whether Swift improves Leeds long term but they’re not going to be able to spend big next month and maybe some pragmatism is a good idea.”

John Swift agent discusses Leeds links

Swift operates in the No 8, No 10 role that Leeds’ midfield tends to be lacking.

And speaking earlier this week, his agent claims a move to Elland Road would interest the player.

“There’s been a lot of speculation in the media about different Premiership clubs being interested in John,” he said.

“At the moment, his sole focus is on playing for Reading and doing the best he can with them.

“Leeds United is a great club and their style of play, manager, and fans would be good for John moving forward in his career.

“However, no formal approaches have been made that we are aware of by Leeds to Reading at this stage.”
