Transfer ‘remains possible’ as Tottenham try again for long-term target

Tottenham Hotspur retain a chance of signing Takehiro Tomiyasu before the transfer window closes, according to one reporter.

Tomiyasu has been one of Tottenham’s main defensive targets throughout the summer window. His ability to play as a full-back in a back four or centre-back in a three make him an appealing candidate to strengthen Nuno Espirito Santo’s backline.

Spurs have been hoping to sign two players in the defensive third this summer. However, so far, they have only been able to bring in Cristian Romero from Atalanta. Thus, one more deal could be in the pipeline.

Fabio Paratici could once again look back to Serie A to find that reinforcement, although their hopes of signing Tomiyasu seemed to be decreasing. First, Bologna’s loose internal deadline for selling the Japan international has passed. In addition, Spurs seemed to be turning their attention to the cheaper Nikola Milenkovic.

But the Serbian has since extended his contract with Fiorentina after a transfer to West Ham collapsed. With Tottenham also missing out, Paratici’s focus could turn back to Tomiyasu.

According to Mike McGrath of the Daily Telegraph, it “remains possible” that Tomiyasu could join Tottenham before the transfer deadline at the end of the month.

McGrath reveals that the reason previous talks between the two clubs stalled was a disagreement over the structure of a £17m deal.

But things never broke down entirely and Tomiyasu remains on Tottenham’s radar as the clock ticks down.

The 22-year-old is yet to play for Bologna this season after being on Olympics duty with Japan over the summer. It will soon become clear whether his next appearance will be in a red and blue shirt, or the white one of Tottenham.

If Tomiyasu does sign for Spurs, they will need to offload one of their current foreign players, as they are currently at their squad limit. The likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Moussa Sissoko and Serge Aurier have been linked with departures.

Tottenham defensive bid falls short

Tomiyasu is not the only defender Tottenham have been looking at. Over the past few months, Paratici has been whittling down an originally lengthy shortlist.

One of the later entrants to that list has also reportedly been the subject of a more concrete approach recently.

But in this case, Tottenham’s bid has not been successful…
