Tottenham told to sign defensive upgrade who can release current star
Tottenham Hotspur have been advised to sign Kurt Zouma from Chelsea in a move that could have non-transfer-related consequences for one of their current players.
Spurs still want to sign an additional defender after already acquiring Cristian Romero earlier this month. They have missed out on one of their targets, Nikola Milenkovic, but are still monitoring other options. Takehiro Tomiyasu and Zouma are among those who remain on their radar.
Their potential pursuit of the latter has now been backed by one pundit who believes he would be an upgrade on their current options. What’s more, it’s claimed that such a signing could free up Eric Dier to change his position again after spending last season in defence.
“Yeah [Zouma is an upgrade],” Shaka Hislop told ESPN FC (transcribed by the Express).
“I like [Davinson] Sanchez in the centre of defence but I don’t think Dier is a centre-back you rely on all season long.
“You want to bring in an out-and-out centre-back and if Eric Dier has to tuck in there every now and then, great.
“But I’d use him in his preferred position as a defensive midfielder. So it makes a lot of sense.
“Zouma is a player I also like a lot. But his chances have been, and will continue to be, limited at Chelsea.
“So it makes sense to me to make that short trip across London to sign for a team who promise a lot. He will feature a whole lot more prominently.”
Zouma has been the subject of transfer speculation for a few weeks now. Chelsea’s next focus in the transfer window is to sign Jules Kounde from Sevilla. However, they must first shift one of their current centre-backs and Zouma could be the casualty.
He was linked with West Ham earlier in the window, but appeared to be out of their budget. Tottenham have thus entered the race in recent days – much to the dissatisfaction of one Blues legend.
Whether the Frenchman will be willing to make such a move remains to be seen. But it appears his chances at Chelsea are fading, despite making 36 appearances in all competitions last season.
