Talks underway as Chelsea looks to secure ‘outstanding’ star with new deal
A report claims Chelsea are set to reward goalkeeper Edouard Mendy with a bumper new dealt to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge.
The 29-year-old has been with the Blues since September 2020. A few eyebrows were raised when the west Londoners paid Rennes a reported £22m for his services. Kepa Arrizabalaga was the man in possession of the goalkeeping gloves at the Bridge.
But it did not take too long before Mendy had usurped the Spaniard as the club’s number one. And he certainly took his chance, with a series of superb displays for both Frank Lampard and then Thomas Tuchel.
The Senegal shot-stopper kept 16 clean sheets in the Premier League last term. And he has already blanked the opposition seven times from 14 outings in 2021-2022.
The former Reims ace was also instrumental in Chelsea’s march to the Champions League title and club bosses have taken note. He is under contract until the summer of 2025.
However, Football Insider are suggesting that the African’s reported wages of £60,000-a-week are set to be increased. The report claims Mendy will earn around £100,000-a-week if he remains at the capital outfit beyond 2025.
Talks are underway about the fresh terms as the European champions look to bring his pay in line with other top stars. They want to prevent him from joining another big club who might offer him more than he currently earns.
Tuchel a big Mendy fan
Mendy was already established as the club’s number one keeper when Tuchel replaced Lampard in the dugout.
New managers have their own ideas but the German tactician stuck with the French-born ace. And it is clear that the manager rates his goalkeeper highly.
“I’m super happy with him,” he said. “He’s an outstanding guy with a fantastic personality, super humble, super calm. His development from the first day has been outstanding.

“He plays with so much confidence. It’s so hard to score against him in training. Our goalkeeper coaches and the second and third goalkeepers did a fantastic job.
“Because only if they are a top team and push each other to the limits can a number one perform like he performs. He is calm because he feels safe in his environment. Every top team needs a top goalkeeper, and we have one.”
