Summer ‘bargain’ repeat unlikely as Dyche reveals Burnley plans
Sean Dyche admits Burnley are hoping to do business in January but acknowledges that it will be tough to ‘snag’ another bargain like Maxwel Cornet.
The Clarets finished just one spot outside the relegation places last season but were 11 points above the drop zone. However, as the busy festive season approaches, the Turf Moor outfit sit 18th in the standings. They have taken only 11 points from 15 games, with eight draws and a solitary victory – a 3-1 success over Brentford.
The north-west outfit are no strangers to being in a tough predicament. They often find themselves in or around the bottom three at Christmas only to rally and avoid the drop.
However, there is a sense that things may be different this time around, with goals hard to come by. They have bagged 14 in the league and shipped 21.
Dyche will not panic and hope to get some help in the new year. Now owned by ALK Capital, there is a promise of funds. But Dyche is not expecting to be handed a king’s ransom.
“The new ownership have put a bit more in and they want to when they can, but we’re not going to hit the big mark,” he told talkSPORT. “We’re not going to hit £20m-plus, we’re still under that, which sounds mad, but that’s the level that it is now.
“For a real gamechanger, or players who are almost definite to change what you do – we were nicking Nick Pope for £1.5m out of Charlton, or Tarky [James Tarkowski] for £4m or £5m out of Brentford – that’s an impossible task now.”
Dyche hails Cornet impact
Cornet was one of three players Burnley paid a fee for last summer. They forked out £13.5m for the Ivory Coast winger and it seems to have been money well spent.
The former Lyon star has scored five goals from nine top-flight outings. And Dyche feels he got a top-class star for way below market value.
“(It’s tough) to get those real game changing players in the current market, unless you snag one, like Maxwel’s done well for us so far,” he added. “It’s still early but he’s done really well for us.
“Top price signing we can make – and guess what? He’s looking like a very effective player. He has done well. We really like the look of him. He’s probably going to be more effective over time, off the left.
“But the transition to the Premier League, the quick play and the way the game changes very quickly, that’s something he’s got to develop into.
“But we’ve put him in the No.10 as well and he’s done really well there. He certainly gives us something different.”
