Sudden twist as starlet with Tottenham, Leicester links agrees new deal
Noni Madueke has signed a new contract with PSV Eindhoven to put on hold the plans of any Premier League club trying to sign him.
Barnet-born winger Madueke had been heavily tipped to return to his home country this summer. He has spent his career so far in the Netherlands with PSV. The likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and his former youth club Tottenham were reportedly looking into a deal to sign him. But the England under-21 international will instead remain in the Eredivisie.
PSV have announced that they have extended Madueke’s contract until 2025, which will fend off his suitors for the time being.
One Portuguese journalist claimed earlier on Wednesday that Leicester are interested in Madueke as well. Furthermore, it was believed that PSV may cash in after their failure to qualify for the Champions League. But they have now made their intentions clear – and they are quite the opposite.
The Dutch side will be keeping Madueke and making the likes of Leicester, Liverpool, Spurs and United wait.
The 19-year-old is happy with the decision, telling their website: “Ever since I’ve been here, I’ve noticed from everything that this is the best place to develop. I therefore did not hesitate for a moment to stay here longer.
“I have felt at home at PSV from day one. We are going to make it a great time together in Eindhoven, with wonderful football evenings.”
PSV chief confirms interest in Madueke
PSV director John de Jong made no secret of the fact that Madueke was in demand when giving his take on the extension.
De Jong added: “There was a lot of interest from foreign clubs in Noni, but we wanted to connect Noni to PSV even longer. After good talks with Noni and his family, he succeeded in extending his contract until 2025.
“As a club, we are very happy that Noni will stay and we look forward to a successful collaboration.”
Madueke made 32 appearances for PSV in a breakthrough year last season, scoring nine goals. He already has six goals from nine games in various competitions to his name this season.
