Rooney hopes Rangnick can have ‘big influence’ on Man Utd

Wayne Rooney is hoping new interim Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick can have a “big influence” on the club.

The appointment of the experienced Rangnick looks to be the most considered appointment since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013. David Moyed, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have all been and gone since. The latter getting the boot last month after a poor run of form which culminated in a 4-1 defeat at Watford.

The 63-year-old Rangnick arrives at Old Trafford with a wealth of experience not only as a coach but also as a sporting director. United will be hoping he can shape United’s short-term and long-term future, as he did at previous club RB Leipzig.

The German has been appointed as interim boss until the end of the season. After that he will take up a two-year consultancy role with the club.

Caretaker boss Michael Carrick will take charge of Thursday’s game with Arsenal.

“I’ll try to make the most of it,” Carrick told MUTV. “But actually it’s about the players, the team and getting the right result.”

Rangnick’s visa application was only approved on Thursday and he will watch from the stands at Old Trafford.

Rangnick has ‘good pedigree’

The paperwork regarding the German’s work permit was pending, but has now been rubber-stamped.

The former Schalke, Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig boss will speak to the media for the first time in the role on Friday. And he will take charge of the team at home to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

A decision that Rooney believes was the correct call.

“Definitely right call for Michael to take the game and Ralf in charge for Sunday,” said Rooney, speaking ahead of Derby’s game with Bristol City.

“Hopefully he does very well. He comes with a good pedigree. Hopefully he can have a big influence on the club.”
