Rio Ferdinand names two Man Utd stars who give Rangnick a headache in Young Boys draw

Ralf Rangnick will have been impressed by just two Manchester United stars in Wednesday’s stuttering 1-1 Champions League draw with Young Boys, according to Rio Ferdinand.

With qualification already assured, Rangnick put out an experiemental team in his first European action at the United helm. As such, the United interim boss made 11 changes from his most recent line-up in an effort to utilise his squad.

However, not all those who came in took their chances to impress. And ultimately, Mason Greenwood’s stunning first-half goal was not enough as Young Boys equalised just before the break through Fabian Rieder’s stunner.

After the game, the 63-year coach picked apart his side’s “sloppy” display with some cutting comments.

However, the draw probably told Rangnick more about his squad that in any other game in charge.

And rather than create the United boss with multiple problems, there were perhaps only two men who caught the eye.

As such, Ferdinand named the only two players from the match who can become regulars under Rangnick.

Rio Ferdinand picks out Greenwood

“I don’t think anyone other than Mason gave Ralf something to think about,’ Ferdinand told BT Sport, via Metro.

Former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves added: “Mason Greenwood is probably the one player in this starting XI would can play in the Premier League side.

“Every time he plays, he is looking forward. It was a beautiful goal, a brilliant finish.”

Having seen Luke Shaw play a part in Greenwood’s goal, Ferdinand reckons he too will soon return to the senior side.

The England left-back has missed four matches with concussion; Alex Telles stepping in during his absence.

“I would put Luke Shaw in that too,” Ferdinand added. “I think him [Greenwood] and Shaw are the players that stand out, the ones that have a chance of playing in the Premier League.”

Rangnick discusses full-back fortunes

With Aaron Wan-Bissaka also starting on the right, Rangnick recognises the talking point he has created at full-back.

Indeed, the former Crystal Palace man has lost his place in the starting XI to Diogo Dalot.

Indeed, such has been his recent turnaround that a major suitor now knows signing the Portuguese is ‘now impossible’.

Discussing their returns, Rangnick says he is happy to have Shaw involved again and hopes to call on him again soon.

“It was great to see Luke Shaw back,” he said.

“Hopefully he can be a candidate for the Norwich game in the squad.”

The chances of Wan-Bissaka featuring then, though, are less clear. He clattered into the advertising boards just as the game was finishing and required treatment.

Rangnick said United will have to monitor how the right-back is over the next couple of days.

“He got two knocks, one on the wrist and knee,” Rangnick confirmed.

“We have to see how this develops by Saturday.”
