Raphael Varane opens up on Man Utd partnership with Harry Maguire
Manchester United new boy Raphael Varane has been speaking about his developing partnership with Harry Maguire.
Varane has made three starts for United to date and all three games have ended in victories.
Maguire has partnered the France international in all of those games and although the pair have recorded only one clean sheet the signs are there that their partnership will blossom.
Varane did arrive as a half-time substitute last week in the defeat to Young Boys. United had started with Victor Lindelof alongside Maguire in defence before a reshuffle just before and just after half-time.
There’s no doubt that Varane, 28, has become Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s preferred partner for Maguire. And the former Real Madrid man says the pair need time to develop an understanding.
Speaking to Norwegian TV channel TV2, Varane said: “He’s a great player.
“On the field, we are still working to get to know each other better. We try to talk so that we can understand each other even better.
“It’s understandable that we need some time for things to be automated, but that’s going to happen because the defence is made up of quality players who have qualities that complement each other.
“I think we will gradually develop a better understanding and a better partnership, which in turn will allow us to perform and compete at our maximum level.”

Varane gunning for silverware
During a decade with Real Madrid, Varane enjoyed a trophy-laden spell. The defender claimed three LaLiga titles in addition to four Champions League crowns.
He is eager to rise to the challenge at Old Trafford. Indeed, the Red Devils have not been able to win the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season at the club in 2013.
And Varane has made it perfectly clear what his main aim for United is.
“This is a new challenge for me. A different competition, a different mentality, a different atmosphere. It’s all new for me but I’ve enjoyed every day so far.
“It’s a big challenge to get Manchester United back to the top but I feel people want to win, people want to do great things with this club, and that’s a big motivation for me.”
