Pogba to play with France superstar next season after huge twist in Man Utd contract saga
A report claims midfielder Paul Pogba has no intention of signing a new Manchester United deal and will instead join Real Madrid for free next summer.
The 28-year-old has now entered the final 12 months of his Old Trafford deal. He will be free to speak to foreign clubs in January and has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain as well as Los Blancos. Lionel Messi’s arrival at the Parc des Princes seems to have ended PSG’s hopes of landing him this summer.
United want him to stay but talks over a new deal have stalled. The Red Devils have a strained relationship with his agent Mino Raiola and the impasse shows no signs of abating.
According to The Star, the France international will not pen fresh terms at the Theatre of Dreams. He will allow his deal to run down and leave as a free agent at the end of 2021-2022.
That will not sit well with the United hierarchy as Pogba still has significant transfer value. The Parisians were reportedly prepared to pay £45m for the former Juventus man.
But United want in excess of £60m for the World Cup winner. That avenue has closed but the Real one seems open.
Landing a player of Pogba’s quality for nothing will be seen as a huge coup by the LaLiga giants.
Pogba the start of new ‘Galatico’ era
Pogba has been with United for five years during a second spell at the club. There have been glimpses of his top form but too often the Frenchman has flattered to deceive.
He fell out with ex-United boss Jose Mourinho and there were rumours that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was not a big fan. His displays for Les Bleus have been far better and more consistent than when he has worn red.
There are many pundits who feel the north-west giants would be better off without him. And, if the report is to be believed, that may well happen next summer.
But it is not just Pogba that the Bernabeu outfit are targeting. He is part of a three-pronged attack, with PSG star Kylian Mbappe and Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland also on the radar.
Real have not been able to make any purchases this summer due to the LaLiga salary cap. But the report states they will more than make up for it when the dust settles on the new campaign.
Mbappe, 22, will also be a free agent if the Ligue 1 giants fail to secure him on new terms during the next nine months. That would mean no transfer fees for two top players and cash available to buy Haaland.
