‘People are wondering’ – Merson hints Tuchel could sell Chelsea record-breaker
Paul Merson has cast serious doubt over Romelu Lukaku and his Chelsea future by suggesting people are starting to think the German “does not fancy” the record Blues signing.
The Blues paid Inter Milan a club record fee of £97.5m for the Belgium international on August 12, his second spell at the club. Big things were expected of the striker and he started well, netting on his debut and four goals in his first four games.
However, it’s all turned a little sour since then. A niggling injury picked up against Malmo in the Champions League saw the Belgian sidelined for a month. And in his last 12 appearances for the Blues, he’s netted just one goal.
Having been left on the bench in recent games, Merson now suggests doubts are emerge over the striker.
And, with his agent already talking about a future move back to Italy, the seeds of doubt are beginning to be sown.
Questions over Lukaku
Now Merson reckons more questions will be asked if Lukaku is again omitted from their next starting line-up.
Ahead of their match against Everton, Merson told Sportskeeda: “I think this is an easy one to call, so I predict a 3-0 win for Chelsea. Everton are sitting ducks at the moment and I just don’t give them a chance.
“They [Everton] were fortunate to beat Arsenal and didn’t do anything extraordinary that day. They just showed a lot of heart and scored an absolute peach to win it late in the game.
“If you look at Everton’s Premier League record in recent weeks, it’s been dismal. They’ve only got five points from a possible 30 and are bottom of the table if you only consider results from October.
“The only question for Chelsea is Romelu Lukaku’s situation. He’s clearly back fully fit now, but when is he going to get back into the team? If he stays on the bench for a few more games, people will start to wonder if Thomas Tuchel really fancies him or not.”
Mason Mount hails Chelsea ‘family’
One man who is feeling more settled in recent weeks is Mason Mount.
The midfielder is looking to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge with new deal talks yet to begin. And recent reports suggest Liverpool are among those watching his situation.
Mount, however, has not shown any indication he is looking to leave. Furthermore, he’s now spoken of the ‘family’ atmosphere at the club.
“There are a lot of players coming through from the academy at the moment. We’ve known each other since we were six, seven, eight years old,” said Mount.
“We’re very close friends on and off the pitch and we’ve known each other a very long time. That helps when you have that close bond.
“Along with the other boys as well, we’re definitely like a family; the team is very close together.
“And I think that’s what you need if you want to go far in competitions. If you want to win big things and win the Premier League, and obviously that’s our next goal.”
