Paper Talk: Liverpool to cash in on Barcelona misery with double deal for star pair; Chelsea fancy Brazil midfielder
Liverpool are plotting a double raid on Barcelona for two of their brightest stars with Gavi first up, Chelsea fancy a Brazil midfielder, while Saturday’s transfer gossip claims West Ham have seen a winger ball fall short.
GAVI ON LIVERPOOL RADAR
Liverpool are prepared to activate the £42.6m (€50m) release clause in the contract of Barcelona midfielder Gavi.
The LaLiga giants, already in the financial mire, are facing further problems over their failure to make Champions League progress.
After a disappointing campaign, they now face playing in the Europa League in the new year after only finishing third in their group. It’s the first time since 2000/01 such a failure has occured.
As such, Barcelona are struggling to negotiate fresh terms with some of their stars – one of which is Gavi.
The 17-year-old is seen as one of the best prospects in the Spanish game. However, with his deal expiring in summer 2023, Barcelona were hoping to extend his stay.
Finances though means they are unlikely to be able to give him the terms he craves, leaving them exposed to his sale.
Now The Sun, citing El Nacional, claims Liverpool are poised to pounce.
Gavi a long-term heir for Henderson
They state his £42.6m exit clause is well within their means – and Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer.
They see Gavi as the long-term heir to Jordan Henderson, who is now in the autumn of his career.
Furthermore, the Spanish outlet claims Liverpool are also keeping a close watch on defender Ronald Araujo.
Like Gavi, his deal also expires in 2023 and negotiations have also cooled.
While Liverpool’s need for a new centre-half is not so demanding, he’s a player of interest should their situation change.
Indeed, Liverpool could look to pounce if enters the free-transfer territory this time next year.
