Medical taken as Man City man set to snub Prem interest for La Liga loan
Yangel Herrera is close to leaving Manchester City for a return to La Liga with Espanyol despite there being a temptation for some Premier League sides to sign him.
Herrera has never played for Man City since joining them in January 2017 from Atletico Venezuela in his homeland. He instantly left on loan to sister club New York City in the MLS. He has been in Spain ever since, first for six months with Huesca and then for the past two seasons with Granada.
With Granada, Herrera reached the quarter-finals of last season’s Europa League, playing against Manchester United. Around that time, there were rumours that he could get a chance elsewhere in the Premier League for the 2021-22 season.
West Ham were said to be interested, as were Leeds United, Crystal Palace and Southampton. The former had the advantage due to their involvement in European football this season.
But Herrera’s next destination will seemingly not be in England after all. Instead, the South American will be returning to Spain.
According to Marca, Herrera has undergone a medical in Barcelona ahead of a move to Espanyol, who are based in the Spanish city. They won promotion back to La Liga from the Spanish second tier last season and will be aiming to establish themselves in the top flight once more.
Although they are yet to win from their opening three La Liga games, Espanyol will be boosted by the addition of Herrera. He played 62 times in the Spanish top tier over the past two seasons.
Man City make formula of deal clear
Still under contract with City until 2024, the deal will reportedly be a loan.
There were some economical issues between Espanyol and Herrera at first. But his desire to continue in La Liga has helped push through a transfer. Furthermore, City did not want to sell him, but ensure he would move somewhere he would be guaranteed regular gametime.
An official announcement from either club is still awaited.
