Man Utd star told his ‘time is done’ as surprise Bruno Fernandes positional change is advised
Paul Pogba will add nothing to the Manchester United side when he returns from injury – with one pundit claiming his ‘race is run’ at Old Trafford.
The United midfielder has made headlines for contrasting reasons during his time at Old Trafford. While he has enjoyed flashes of his best form, inconsistency has been a problem throughout his tenure in the side.
Injuries have also not helped, but after recovering from his latest setback, Pogba has reached a crossroads. Indeed, he is back fit with only six months remaining on his contract.
The France international has been in talks with United for some time. However, he has yet to come to an agreement over an extension.
At the same time, Pogba has reportedly identified Real Madrid as his dream move in the summer.
PSG and Juventus are also other potential destinations for the World Cup winner.
In any case, Ralf Rangnick confirmed last week that he will bring the midfielder back into the team. The manager insists he is happy to let the player show his best form, even if it is to secure a contract elsewhere in the end.
Cole wary of Paul Pogba return
However, Joe Cole has advised against it. Speaking on BT Sport, he reckons Pogba will add nothing to the United side and claims his time as a player for the Red Devils is over.
“I don’t think Paul Pogba adds anything to this side. His race is run at Man United,” Cole stated, as cited by the Daily Express.
“Ever since Bruno Fernandes walked through the door, I think he’s just a percentage better than Pogba in all areas and there’s only room for one of them in the team because of egos.
“So I think his time is done. He needs a new challenge. But I’m a big fan of Bruno Fernandes.”
United’s midfield has come in for plenty of criticism this season, with Rangnick looking to bolster his options.
Indeed, the likes of Amadou Haidara, Franck Kessie and Denis Zakaria have all been linked. Indeed, their hopes of signing Swiss star Zakaria were significantly boosted over the weekend.
Bruno Fernandes positional change is suggested
Whether United get their hands on a new midfielder or nor this month remains to be seen.
With an array of attacking options at their disposal, finding the right balance in midfield remains an issue.
However, Cole reckons Fernandes could yet prove an option in a No 6 role, as opposed the playmaker role he often performs.
Fernandes finished Saturday’s match against West Ham alongside Scott McTominay in the base of midfield following Fred’s substitution.
“Well I agree in the sentiment that the midfield is the area they need to strengthen,” Cole added.
“McTominay I like but there needs to be something else, a different ingredient in there.
“I can’t have that Bruno Fernandes isn’t the man. Playing in this deeper role I think he’s pressed well, he’s looked to probe.
“But I think the problem with Man United fans is they’re judging it on the great teams they’ve had in the past. This is a new generation, this is a new team, and I think today they’ve looked okay.
“I think there needs to be someone else in there to push them [McTominay and Fred] and also to compliment the balance in there.”
