Man Utd compared to farmyard animal – but pundit makes prediction Ralf Rangnick will love
Manchester United “look like a donkey right now” – but former Premier League title winner Chris Sutton has made a prediction that will please their fans and new interim manager Ralf Rangnick.
The wise, old German sage has been selected as the man to take charge of United through to the end of the season. He inherits a hugely-talented squad, but one which largely underperformed under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. His first interview with United underlined his aims for the season.
Getting the best out of his players and finding the right balance will be Rangnick’s immediate priority. With a clash against Arsenal on the horizon, he won’t have much time to assess his players.
One man whose levels have dropped off is Bruno Fernandes. Indeed, Rangnick has been informed that the Portugal midfielder may have been ‘found out’.
The attacker has plundered six vital assists in the Champions League. But his league form has paled in comparison to what he previously produced.
Fernandes has notched just four goals and three assists on the domestic front.
Certainly getting Fernandes back to his usual best will be a factor if they are to climb the table. Currently eighth, the only way is surely up for United.
Man Utd to finish fourth – Sutton
Indeed, while comparing Manchester United to a donkey, he feels the Rangnick effect will soon have United upwardly mobile.
And in a prediction that fans will love, he’s backing them to secure a top-four finish under the German.
“We’ve got the three-horse (title) race and bringing up the rear, although they look like a donkey right now, I’m saying Manchester United will finish fourth,” he told the Daily Mail.
“The fact that Arsenal don’t have Europe this season is a massive advantage for them. Mikel Arteta and his players have got no excuses — no Thursday night games in Baku to hide behind. They’re even on the verge of having Arsene Wenger back at the club. And he knows a thing or two about finishing fourth.
“But Ralf Rangnick is a super-manager, a visionary of the game. He’s the godfather of gegenpressing. And I believe United are capable of sneaking into the Champions League places at the expense of fellow European hopefuls Arsenal and West Ham.”
Chris Sutton explains why Chelsea will win title
Chris Sutton, meanwhile, has offered his thoughts on the title race and believes it is Chelsea who will triumph.
“Now that a third of the season has passed, I’m leaning towards Chelsea, who did sign Romelu Lukaku. But let’s be honest, any one of Chelsea, City and Liverpool could win it.
“Those three are on another level to everyone else and I’d be surprised if any of these horses fell out of the race. For the neutral, the prospect of them making this a scrap to the bitter end is exciting.
“Even without a striker, City are capable of being crowned champions. Their performance at Chelsea in September was one of complete control. But I sense that this will end up being a special season for Thomas Tuchel. Therefore, I think it will be dark blue ribbons getting tied to that trophy in May.”
