Major hope for Newcastle with Bundesliga club looking to sell 6ft 6in talisman
Newcastle United may gain hope of avoiding relegation as Wolfsburg could be forced into the sale of clinical striker Wout Weghorst, should an offer be made.
At present, Newcastle are having a season to forget. Indeed, the side are comfortably within the relegation places, having gained just 10 points after 16 games.
As such, they need to recruit well in January, in order to steer themselves clear of the drop.
However, they may receive a lifeline, in terms of a deal with Wolfsburg. A report from Kicker (via Sport Witness) claims Wolfsburg could be forced into the sale of Weghorst, should an offer be tabled.
The Magpies are reported to be interested in Weghorst, and it is clear to see why that is.
Scoring goals will be crucial in Newcastle’s bid to avoid relegation. Indeed, Weghorst is capable of doing just that, having bagged 20 in 34 games in the previous Bundesliga campaign.
What’s more, Newcastle’s influx of cash means that they could outbid any side. As such, with Wolfsburg needing to sell in order to recruit themselves, a deal could be easy for the Magpies to pull off.
The report claims that if a deal is not done in January, it is ‘unlikely’ that Weghorst will remain in Wolfsburg beyond the summer.
However, a summer move does not particularly fit Newcastle’s timeline. Indeed, they need to sign players now, or avoiding relegation looks improbable.
As such, the Magpies need to swoop for Weghorst – who stands at 6ft 6in – sooner rather than later.
Weghorst joined on Magpies’ European shortlist
Sven Botman is another European star who Newcastle are interested in. He has also been subject to interest from a number of other Premier League sides.
Indeed, defence has been a major issue for Newcastle this season. The Magpies are joint with Norwich for the most goals conceded in the Premier League this season.
As such, an imposing centre-back would be key for Newcastle to stem the tide of goals.
Newcastle’s ‘serious interest’ could stand them in good stead. Although, Botman is currently playing Champions League football at Lille. European football is likely favourable to a relegation scrap in England.
