Lukaku explains how he has changed after sealing record Chelsea return

Romelu Lukaku has officially completed his return to Chelsea FC, vowing to help the club continue their recent success and confirming he is a “more mature” player than he was in his previous spell at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have been in the market for a reliable goal-getter all summer and they couldn’t have found many better than Lukaku. He has now completed his return to the club from Inter Milan, with whom he won the Serie A title last season. He returns to a Chelsea side who have won the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup in recent months.

Lukaku previously played for Chelsea between 2011 and 2014 after joining from Anderlecht, spending the last two of those years out on loan. He was very young at the time and never scored in a blue shirt. That will no doubt change very soon.

Chelsea are believed to have broken their transfer record to bring Lukaku back to the Premier League in a £97.5m deal. The former West Brom, Everton and Manchester United forward has signed a contract until 2026.

“I’m happy and blessed to be back at this wonderful club,” he told their club website. “It’s been a long journey for me. I came here as a kid who had a lot to learn, now I’m coming back with a lot of experience and more mature.

“The relationship I have with this club means so much to me, as you know. I have supported Chelsea as a kid and now to be back and try to help them win more titles is an amazing feeling.

“The way the club is going fits my ambitions perfectly at 28 and just coming off winning Serie A. I think this opportunity comes at the right time and hopefully we can have a lot of success together.

“Since I left Chelsea, it’s been a long journey with a lot of ups and downs, but these experiences made me strong and the challenge is to try to help the team win some more trophies. I can’t wait to get started and to help the club achieve more success.”

Lukaku “one of the world’s best”

The 28-year-old scored a remarkable 64 goals in 95 games across two seasons in Italy. Now, though, he is back in the league in which he has spent most of his career.

Chelsea can now end any regrets they had about seeing Lukaku flourish elsewhere following his departure, because he is their own once more.

Blues director Marina Granovskaia added: “Romelu Lukaku is quite simply one of the world’s best strikers and goalscorers. We are absolutely delighted to be bringing him back to the club he loves, and are excited to be adding his talent to our Champions League-winning squad.

“We are of course looking to build on last season’s success, and Lukaku will play a big role in achieving our targets. I’m sure all Chelsea fans will join me in saying welcome home, Romelu!”
