Lage makes obvious admission as Wolves woes continue
Wolves manager Bruno Lage has urged his players to stop gifting goals to the opposition after their 2-0 defeat to Brentford at Molineux.
The West Midlanders lost their fourth top-flight game of the campaign as Ivan Toney and Bryan Mbeumo were on target. Toney opened the scoring from the penalty spot on 28 minutes before Mbeumo made it 2-0 six minutes later. Wolves enjoyed more possession than the visitors but failed to register a shot on target in the 90 minutes.
It means they have yet to score in their opening three league defeats at home. Lage was understandably downbeat and felt the penalty was key to the outcome.
“The result is not good for us. Today we have been unlucky,” he told BT Sport. “It was a penalty for them so we gave the chance for Brentford to start winning the game.
“They did nothing until that moment. We had a good reaction but in the same way we lost control of the game.”
Having struggled with Nuno Espirito Santo at the helm last season, the Black Country outfit were hoping for a lift this term. But they have just last weekend’s victory over Watford to celebrate after a tough opening to the campaign.
And the Portuguese coach feels he has the answer to their woes – and it is not rocket science.
“When you look back we were punished for this result but the way we play and create chances we need to score goals and cannot offer goals to the opponent like that,” he added.
Frank’s mood contrasts with Lage
The victory was the Bees first away from home on their first foray into the Premier League. It moved them onto eight points and will further boost the players’ confidence. Boss Thomas Frank was delighted with the result.
The three points moved the west Londoners up to ninth in the standings and he praised the ability of his side.
“These players are amazing and they keep… surprising me isn’t the word, but impressing me,” he said. “It was a very impressive, brave performance. In the second half we were down to 10 men but we defended with our heart and soul. We gave only one big chance away and that’s very impressive.”
Next up for Wolves in the league is a trip to St Mary’s to face Southampton while Brentford are at home to Liverpool.
