‘Gutted’ Struijk sends touching message to Elliott as Liverpool release update

Pascal Struijk has confirmed he “never meant” to cause serious injury to Harvey Elliott, who Liverpool have confirmed has been discharged from hospital.

Struijk received a red card for his challenge on Elliott in Leeds’ 3-0 loss to Liverpool on Sunday. The Reds midfielder went off on a stretcher after dislocating his ankle. It overshadowed the match, which was otherwise a positive occasion for Liverpool.

From their side, Leeds have insisted there was no malice behind Struijk’s challenge. Head coach Marcelo Bielsa and owner Andrea Radrizzani have both said as such, while admitting their sympathy for Elliott.

Struijk himself has now confirmed he “would never wish” such an injury on anyone and issued his apology to Elliott.

The defender wrote on Instagram: “In today’s game something happened that I would never wish on anyone.

“@harveyelliott07 my thoughts are with you. I’m gutted and never meant for this to happen. I wish you a speedy recovery and hope to see you back on the pitch soon.”

Elliott had already been able to share his take on the situation from hospital in Leeds even before full-time.

He wrote: “Thank you for the messages guys! Road to recovery. YNWA.”

Elliott to require surgery

The attacking midfielder has now been discharged from hospital, it has been confirmed. He will have surgery in the coming days.

Liverpool released a statement, saying: “Liverpool Football Club can confirm Harvey Elliott has been discharged from hospital after suffering a serious ankle injury in the game against Leeds United on Sunday.

“The 18-year-old was stretchered from the field at Elland Road after sustaining the injury in a challenge midway through the second half.

“Elliott will be required to undergo surgery in the coming days and the club will offer a further update on his prognosis in due course.

“Harvey, his family and Liverpool FC would like to place on record their thanks to the paramedics and all the staff at Leeds General Infirmary for the care and treatment given.”

Elliott was making his fourth appearance of the season for Liverpool, who will feel his absence in upcoming games.

He has made a bright impression since his reintegration following a loan with Blackburn Rovers. However, he now has to pause his progress for a while.

Liverpool will be back in action without Elliott on Wednesday, when they play AC Milan in the Champions League.
