Frank Lampard ally laments Thomas Tuchel blunder in Chelsea draw v Man Utd
Thomas Tuchel was too slow in turning to the Chelsea bench as the Premier League leaders were held to a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, according to a former Blues coach.
Chelsea had 23 shots in comparison to United’s three, but both sides could only score once. United took the lead when Jorginho failed to control the ball as it dropped from the air, letting Jadon Sancho in. The forward finished one on one with Edouard Mendy against the run of play.
Jorginho made amends by equalising from the penalty spot. But Chelsea could not find a way past David De Gea in open play.
Reflecting on the result, Tuchel insists that “these things can happen in football”.
And while Chelsea can be pleased they were able to hit back and preserve their status as league leaders, Jody Morris insists they could still have won.
Indeed, Frank Lampard’s No 2 at Stamford Bridge claims Tuchel was too slow to turn to his bench. And he feels that being more proactive could have helped turn the tide Chelsea’s way.
He told Stadium Astro: “From a fan’s perspective, I would definitely have liked a couple if not all three changes at the top end of the pitch a lot earlier.
“I just felt that with the amount of dominance Chelsea had they wasn’t creating enough real good chances.
“The fact you have the level of bench that Chelsea had, there was no reason why at least two of them could have been brought on a lot earlier.
Lukaku ‘the perfect Chelsea addition’
“I thought Lukaku was the perfect addition but that’s without knowing the physical capabilities he has right now. He might not have had more than the manager gave him.
“It’s always easier to say after the game but we were slightly surprised that Tuchel didn’t make changes earlier.”
Morris spent around 18 months as Chelsea No 2 in assisting Lampard.
Since their departure, the Blues have won the Champions League and are currently top of the Premier League.
The Blues were down in ninth place in the table when Lampard and Morris were axed.
Thomas Tuchel explains Lukaku cameo
Tuchel has had to be creative with his selections up front in recent weeks, with Lukaku and Timo Werner unavailable for spells.
Explaining his decision to turn to Lukaku late on, he claims he may have been a starter had he proven his fitness.
He said: “If he is fully fit he is a starter for us but he is not at the moment.
“It was more than I actually wanted but we were so close to the opponent’s goal. I thought maybe he could help with his presence.”
Chelsea are next in action away to Watford on Wednesday night.
