Foden reveals ‘special’ Grealish trait and issues ominous Man City warning
Phil Foden is relishing his midfield partnership with ‘special’ Jack Grealish’ and feels Manchester City are ‘the team to beat’ this season.
Grealish, 25, is now on board the City train and in line to make his debut this weekend. The champions travel to north London on Sunday to take on Tottenham as they look to make it back-to-back titles. The Birmingham-born ace is likely to be in the side following his £100m move from Aston Villa.
But Foden misses out as he has still to recover from the foot injury sustained ahead of the Euro 2020 final. The pair know each other well from their time together with the Three Lions.
And Foden has revealed what he feels Grealish brings to the party.
“We are close, when I first went to England we just got on really well on and off the pitch. I’m really happy he’s signed here,” he told Sky Sports News. “He’s fearless on the ball. He can just change a game on his own, so I believe that he’s a really special player and he’s going to be key for us.”
There is still no timeframe for Foden’s return to action but the 21-year-old is eager to get back in four weeks.
“Hopefully I can get back playing with him and enjoy my football,” he added. “It’s still a little bit sore.
“It was such a shame to do it before the Euro final, but I’m working hard in the gym. Hopefully it flies by and I can get back on the pitch.”
Foden confident of City glory
Pep Guardiola’s side romped to the 2020-2021 Premier League title. They were top of the table by the end of January and were never headed again.
The Citizens ended up 12 points ahead of second-place Manchester United and are favourites to repeat the dose. Guardiola has a star-studded squad to choose from and Foden expects the Spaniard to tinker throughout the campaign.
“The manager likes to rotate, and there’s a lot of games to be played,” he continued. “I’m sure there won’t be one XI for the full year.
“Everyone’s going to play a part. Everyone is happy about that, they’re ready to play and the manager makes us feel loved.”
The Stockport-born ace refused to name which club he thinks will be City’s main rival this term. But he did send out a clear message that he and his team-mates are ready for all-comers.
“Once you’ve won it it’s really hard to retain it, going into this season we’re going to be the team to beat,” said the youngster. “We will have to live up to that with the players we’ve got. I’m confident and can’t wait to go.”
