Bruno Lage explains ‘balance’ in Wolves camp after mixed start to Prem life
Bruno Lage has explained the “balance” he is implementing in the Wolves camp after his mixed start to life as a Premier League manager.
Lage and his side were on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline in their first three league matches of the season. In the defeats to Leicester, Tottenham and Man Utd, there were encouraging signs, though. They had 57 attempts on goal across the games.
And their attacking threat was finally rewarded last weekend against Watford. The Portuguese manager got his first points on the board in a 2-0 win.
Despite their tricky start, Lage has insisted the mood at the West Midlands club did not alter, which is how he wants it to be.
Ahead of Saturday’s match against Brentford he said: “I don’t see too much difference. The confidence comes in two ways – one is the result and the other is the way we work, the way we are playing and chances we are creating.

“When we win everything is not good and when we lose everything is not wrong. It should be the balance between the two.
“Since the first day I have seen everyone trying to work hard to improve. That’s why the environment has been nice in these three months.”
The match against the Bees could mark the full debut of Hwang Hee-chan. The South Korea international came off the bench and scored the second against Watford.
Lage is very content with his attacking options, though is urging on the side on caution with the on-loan striker.
“Hwang did very well in Austria [with Red Bull Salzburg] and he didn’t have many chances in Germany and, now, he has started very well with us,” he said.
“He has only played 30 minutes so, in the same way, I don’t want to put pressure on anyone. I want to train the way we want to play, with a high tempo, and he is one more player to help us.
“I’m very happy to have four players to play there [in attack]. That’s the point, to have top players.”
Wolves target was close to move
Meanwhile, the agent of a player targeted by Wolves has revealed his client had ‘one foot out of Porto’ in the summer.
The club’s chiefs considered Zaidu Sanusi in the window. He is a Nigeria international who made 25 appearances in the Portuguese top flight last season, scoring one goal.
Wolves reportedly bid for his services, but his £17m price tag proved problematic.
Sanusi’s agent has now spoken about the transfer saga for the first time. He said (via HITC): “We got the message the [Porto] coach [Conceicao] wanted him to stay. It was unexpected as we thought he had one foot out of the club.”
