Arsenal forward has new European escape route, as all-time great eyes last-gasp deal
AC Milan have entered the race to sign Willian despite there being plenty of talk about a return to South America for the Arsenal winger.
Willian joined Arsenal on a free transfer from London rivals Chelsea last summer, but it is a move he has come to regret. It took him until May to score his first – and to date, only – Arsenal goal. His high wages are thus problematic for the Gunners, who could do with offloading him if possible.
But the very fact that he earns a lot may have affected their hopes of getting rid of him so far. Suitors may not be willing to match what they are paying him over his contract, which has two years left to run. However, there has been some progress in recent days.
Corinthians, who were Willian’s first club, are supposedly interested in an emotional reunion. The attacking midfielder would thus return to his native Brazil. It is a move that his father thinks would make a lot of sense.
But there may yet be an opportunity for the 33-year-old to prolong his career in Europe, as he personally may desire. According to RMC Sport, AC Milan are showing an interest in Willian.
The Rossoneri are yet to find a replacement for Hakan Calhanoglu, who left them on a free transfer for cross-city rivals Inter this summer. Willian would give them another option in the attacking midfield area.
RMC claim Milan have been offered the ex-Shakhtar Donetsk star’s services and are open to a deal. Club legend turned director Paolo Maldini appreciates Willian’s qualities and may make a move.
The next few days will be decisive as the transfer deadline approaches. Arsenal could still have a chance of offloading him in the current window.
Willian made 37 appearances last season but is yet to add to them this term. Should Milan accelerate their efforts to sign him, that may remain his final tally.
Arsenal transfer chief under threat
Willian was another blot on the record of technical director Edu, who has not managed to build a winning side yet.
Arsenal have started the season in worrying fashion after missing out on European qualification last term. As such, pressure is mounting on manager Mikel Arteta.
But another key senior figure in Edu is at risk of losing his job as well, according to reports…
