Advantage Leeds, as transfer hint sparks hope over striker with fearsome reputation
Leeds United are interested in Penarol striker Agustin Alvarez, and a hint about the star’s price could give them the edge over Barcelona.
Leeds’ injury troubles of late have left them bare in the final third. Indeed, Patrick Bamford’s injury on his return to Premier League action was a big blow for the Whites.
Injuries to Bamford and Rodrigo mean they are left with three recognised strikers, two of whom are 19 years old. Despite Joe Gelhardt impressing against Chelsea, he is still inexperienced at the top level.
Indeed, adding a proven goalscorer to the side could be key in helping the Whites to climb back up the table. What’s more, replicating last season’s ninth place finish looks more and more unlikely without one available.
As such, Leeds are interested in Agustin Alvarez from Penarol, per a report via Sport Witness.
The Uruguayan has scored 23 goals in 2021, and looks a top talent, despite being only 20 years of age. Indeed, he is being tipped as the ‘natural heir to Luis Suarez’.
If Alvarez becomes even half the player the ex-Liverpool and Barcelona icon became, Leeds would be pulling off a real coup.
There are, however, a couple of other clubs reportedly interested in Alvarez, namely Barcelona.
Barcelona’s interest in a player likened to a club legend is understandable. However, the report also states the Uruguayan’s can be signed for around €12million, which would be easier for Leeds to conjure up than it would Barcelona at present.
As such, the west Yorkshire outfit would surely be ahead of them in the battle for the star. Furthermore, it may be plain sailing for Leeds to pursue Alvarez in the January transfer window.
Leeds given hope amid injury crisis
In addition to the forwards that are out with injuries, key man Kalvin Phillips also picked up an injury against Brentford.
Granted, that is still a lengthy period for Leeds to play without a crucial player. However, a hamstring injury can generally keep players out for a lot longer.
Indeed, the Whites will hope Adam Forshaw continues the form he has been in since his return to the side. Hopefully for Leeds, they can cope without Phillips during his absence.
