Leeds United locked into battle with Prem big boys for Championship ace

Leeds United are one of three Premier League sides reported to be keen on signing Championship star Fabio Carvalho in January.

The Whites are struggling to replicate their form of last season. Indeed, Marcelo Bielsa’s men have been riddled with a host of injuries and remain without star striker Patrick Bamford, who has not started a game since September 17.

And despite a recent improvement, Saturday’s disappointing 1-0 loss to Newcastle leaves them 15th in the Premier League.

Having scored just 24 goals in 21 league games this season, the West Yorkshire side are crying out for an attacking spark.

Furthermore, Fulham’s Carvalho looks to be the perfect player to add that to the team. The Daily Mail reports he is the player Leeds are most interested in at the moment.

Carvalho has had a breakout season in the Championship this term, after making his senior debut last season. The 19-year-old has contributed to 11 goals in 17 league games this season. Indeed, five of those goal involvements coming in the last three games.

The attacking-midfielder’s top form has helped Fulham to an eight-point lead in the Championship title race. What’s more, he reportedly rejected a new contract from the Cottagers in November.

While that seems to bode well for Leeds, the interest from Liverpool and West Ham creates an unwelcome obstacle in their pursuit.

The sides – who sit second and fifth in the Premier League, respectively – likely have more of a pull than struggling Leeds.

However, Carvalho would likely be a mainstay of the Leeds side. Whereas the other sides would presumably ease him in, as the Hammers did with Championship imports Jarrod Bowen and Said Benrahma.

Carvalho and Aaronson would bolster midfield

Leeds are also interested in adding USA star Brenden Aaronson to their midfield. Signing both Aaronson and Carvalho would add heaps of quality to that area of the field.

Paddy Kenny feels the signing of Aaronson would be a top move for the Whites.

“Leeds have needed to strengthen,” Kenny said. “And I think Bielsa has always said he will only sign players he thinks will benefit the first team.”

Indeed, Aaronson looks a top signing if Leeds can pull it off.
