FSG flex muscles as Liverpool owners confirmed bidders for ailing club
A report in South America claims Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group are set to expand their empire by purchasing Brazilian football club Cruzeiro.
FSG have been in charge of the Anfield giants for more than a decade and overseen a period of success. After bringing in Jurgen Klopp as manager, the Reds have won both the Premier League and Champions League. They are challenging on both fronts once again in 2021-2022.
But it has not all been sweetness and light. The owners have been accused of using the club to raise revenue.
And their involvement in the proposed European Super League also drove a wedge between fans and the club. FSG have fingers in a number of pies and, in addition to Liverpool, own Major League Baseball’s Boston Red Sox.
However, it seems as though they are about to add another football club to their portfolio. Four-time Brazilian champions Cruzeiro are currently in the second tier.
They have been hoping to attract investors. And former superintendent of Cruzeiro, Aloisio Vasoncellos confirmed to Superesportes, per The Mirror, that FSG are in the frame.
“The negotiation is international. There will be proposals from all sides,” he said. “I support the proposal of the Bank of Boston, which has links with XP (Investments).
“They own Liverpool (England), which is the best organized and managed football club in Europe. He was even world champion and later runner-up in the world.”
And he feels the takeover is a way to pull the club out of the mire and put it back where it belongs.
“This day marks this division, between the stage of disgrace, which has passed, fortunately, and the stage of grace, which looks forward,” he added. “With a horizon, I believe, strong. Cruzeiro has assets, it has 10 million fans.”
Deal to boost Brazilian numbers at Liverpool
Liverpool already have four Brazilians on the books, with regular goalkeeper Alisson plus 18-year-old shot-stopper Marcelo Pitaluga in the ranks. Fabinho and Roberto Firmino complete the quartet.
And it would be no surprise to see further players from Brazil arrive on Merseyside if FSG do complete the takeover. Cruzeiro president Sergio Rodrigues stopped short of naming those involved.
But he made it clear that anything that transpires is for the good of Raposa.
“There is interest from club owners, from individuals with funds, but we have confidentiality agreements,” he said. “People ask me to speak about a country.
“If I do, they will research everyone’s lives and this could stop the negotiations. All successful negotiations. that we see in the market, their first step is confidentiality to work.
“What Cruzeiro fans can be sure of is that, like them, we want the best for the club.”
