Man City trying to take advantage of Arsenal bargain with sudden transfer decision

Nuno Tavares is already attracting glances from another Premier League powerhouse just months after his arrival at Arsenal, according to a report.

Tavares joined Arsenal from Benfica in July to provide competition for left-back Kieran Tierney. As it turns out, the new signing has featured in more Premier League matches so far this season than the Scotsman. However, Tierney still has more starts under his belt.

But Tavares is proving to be a competent alternative and someone who could be eyeing a bigger role as he develops.

Arsenal have him under a long-term contract until 2025 with the option of a further year. However, they may have to fend off rival interest sooner than they were expecting.

According to ESPN, Tavares is now on the radar of reigning champions Manchester City.

Left-back is an area City are actively looking to strengthen. They are having to rely on Oleksandr Zinchenko (originally a midfielder) and Joao Cancelo (preferably a right-sided player) in the role at present.

ESPN concede that it would be unlikely for them to sign Tavares in January. However, he is someone they are now monitoring in view of a potential future deal.

Tavares has featured 14 times between the Premier League and EFL Cup so far this season. He has provided one assist but has impressed with his all-round performances.

Arsenal will be keen to reap the rewards of their £8m investment for longer than a few months. But if the time ever does come to sell him, they could be in line for a decent profit.

Losing him to a Premier League rival would be a significant blow, though, as Arsenal continue their attempts to get back among European contention.

Man City prepare new full-back deal

While City are aiming to add a new full-back if they can, they are also looking to tie down the services of one currently at their disposal.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano claims City want to hand Cancelo a big reward for his performances. They see him as a ‘key player’ and are preparing to put a bumper new contract on the table.

It will see the 27-year-old’s wages rise from a reported £80,000 to over £100,000 per week. The new deal will also extend his spell in Manchester to beyond 2025.

The contract offer will materialise in the next few months. City are hoping for discussions to ‘progress’ in the new year.

Cancelo cost the club £60m when joining from Juventus in 2019. The transfer also saw Danilo move to Turin. He has more than made up for that fee with some stunning showings in defence.
