Ralf Rangnick to have final say as new boss learns of Man Utd agreement for £28m LaLiga star
Manchester United are weighing up whether to push through a January deal for an England star, with new interim manager Ralf Rangnick said to have the final say on the prospective £28m deal.
The wily German has been handed the reins at United as the Red Devils look towards an exciting new era. The 63-year-old becomes the semi-permanent successor for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, taking charge of United until the end of the season. He’ll then stay on in what is expected to be an advisory capacity.
United were hoping the documention would arrive in time for him to take charge against Arsenal on Thursday. However, a delay in receiving his visa means Michael Carrick continues in caretaker charge.
Even so, he should be in the dugout by the time Crystal Palace visit Old Trafford on Sunday. As a result of Rangnick’s appointment, Chris Sutton has compared the club to a farmyard animal – but still insists they’ll finish in the top four.
Indeed, the hard work for Rangnick is already underway. He has a hugely-talented squad at his disposal – but one which clearly under-performed under Solskjaer’s watch.
Finding the right blend and mix will be one of his first assignments. And with the January window opening in just over a month, Rangnick won’t have long to assess who to bring in and who to ship out.
One player that has long been on United’s radar is Kieran Trippier. The Atletico Madrid full-back was on United’s wishlist over the summer. However, the LaLiga champions’ £28m asking price saw United back out of a potential deal.
‘Two and a half year deal on cards’
As per AS, United are willing to meet Atletico’s price for the 31-year-old. They state director of football John Murtough has already agreed a contract for the England man on a reported two-and-a-half-year deal.
They report that Diego Simeone doesn’t want to lose Trippier. However, the player’s desire to return to his native north-west will see the deal pushed through, with Atleti making a handsome profit on the side.
Trippier is also reportedly being chased by Newcastle United but only has eyes for the Red Devils.
Now, AS reports that the agreement between United and Atletico remains in place for Trippier. And while Solskjaer is no longer at the wheel, Rangnick will be given the final say on the agreement.
As such, the decision on Trippier’s future very much lies in the German’s hands.
Kieran Trippier may replace departing Dalot
Much could, of course, depend on the performances of Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the upcoming period. The former Crystal Palace man has not been at his best this season and gave away a clumsy penalty in the draw at Chelsea.
Whether Trippier signs or not, another man who does look like he’s on his way is Diogo Dalot.
As per AS, he looks increasingly likely to leave Old Trafford in the winter window. A return to Italy – possibly with Jose Mourinho’s Roma – remains a strong option for the Portuguese.
Dalot spent the 2020/21 season with AC Milan, but returned to United after they opted against making the move permanent.
Now possibility of a loan deal to Roma looks a distinct possiblility. Reports claim he can move for a €1.5m loan fee, with an option to make that a permanent €15m transfer in the summer, according to il Corriere dello Sport.
