Chelsea star’s redemption not enough as Man Utd battlers take a point under pressure – Player Ratings

Chelsea and Manchester United had to settle for a point apiece after drawing 1-1 in a lively if not thrilling Premier League game at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea dominated the first half, in which United failed to record a shot on target. But the Blues could not get a goal to show for it.

Instead, it was the visitors who broke the deadlock in the second half when Jadon Sancho capitalised on a mistake from Jorginho.

But the Italian midfielder made up for his error by scoring Chelsea’s equaliser via a penalty following Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s foul on Thiago Silva.

Chelsea

Edouard Mendy: Not tested at all by United in the first half. May have been disappointed to be beaten one-on-one for the opening goal. Almost gave away a big chance late on with a misplaced pass out. 6

Trevoh Chalobah: Usually tidy in possession and also confident at closing down spaces. 7

Thiago Silva: Calm and composed in the middle of the Chelsea back three, led by example and won the penalty that prompted the equaliser. 8

Antonio Rudiger: Went close with a curling shot from the edge of the box in the first half. Always committed with his defensive duties. Blazed over a big chance to win it in stoppage time. 7

Reece James: Saw plenty of the ball down the right-hand side, in the thick of the action. Had mixed success with his output but generally good. 7

Jorginho: To blame for the opening goal after trying and failing to control a ball from the air and letting Sancho in. Prior to that, had been better on the ball. Made amends for his mistake by calmly converting the equaliser from the penalty spot. 7

Oh, Jorginho…

Ruben Loftus-Cheek: Comfortable within a midfield pairing, continued his recent resurgence even if he could have shown more confidence going forward. Still making progress. 7

Marcos Alonso: Regaining his starting berth after Ben Chilwell’s injury, put in a good shift down the left flank. 7

Hakim Ziyech: Tried to force things a bit too much when settling into the game. Involved plenty and worked hard, but not much came off cleanly. 5

Callum Hudson-Odoi: Lively from the beginning, creating a chance with one clever pass and forcing the first save of the game with a shot of his own. Faded a bit in the latter stages. 7

Timo Werner: Struggled for clear-cut chances, firing wide with one aerial effort towards the hour mark, for example. 5

Substitutes:

Christian Pulisic (on for Hudson-Odoi, 78 mins): N/A

Mason Mount (on for Alonso, 78): N/A

Romelu Lukaku (on for Werner, 82): N/A

Manchester United

David De Gea: Came to United’s rescue on a number of occasions in the first half, denying Hudson-Odoi down low early and tipping a powerful Rudiger effort onto the woodwork in another standout save. Not quite as assured in the second half but still not beaten from open play. 7

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: Made some challenges but often only after being caught out of position. Gave away the penalty from which Chelsea equalised with a rash challenge on Silva. Saved himself with a few last-ditch blocks. 5

Victor Lindelof: Started the game in combative manner, winning an early header and a challenge. Continued to make blocks throughout. 8

Eric Bailly: Replacing the suspended Harry Maguire in defence, sometimes read the play well. 6

Alex Telles: Quietly grew into the game down the left-hand side but didn’t have a major impact. 6

Nemanja Matic: A little bit sluggish in the opening stages, but his more physical presence gave a different dimension in midfield. 6

Scott McTominay: Got on the ball a decent amount and worked hard off it. Sometimes off the pace in terms of challenges but put his body on the line. 7

Fred: Sometimes caught in possession but showed a bit more expression on the ball than usual. 7

Bruno Fernandes: Aimed wide with a poor first attempt of the game and nearly cost his team at the other end with an aimless pass that led to a Chelsea chance. But it was his looping clearance that led to the opening goal. 5

Jadon Sancho: Lifted another weight off his shoulders with his first Premier League goal. He showed composure to finish one on one with Mendy. 7

Marcus Rashford: Leading the line in the absence of the benched Cristiano Ronaldo, wasn’t really up to the flow of the game. Put teammates under pressure with some loose passing and earned a yellow card for a late foul. 5

Substitutes:

Cristiano Ronaldo (on for Sancho, 64): Wasn’t able to affect the game after coming on and earned a yellow card. 6

Jesse Lingard (on for Rashford, 77): N/A

Donny van de Beek (on for Fernandes, ): N/A
