David Moyes has said Declan Rice is now worth more than £100million, but Nigel Winterburn isn’t yet convinced anyone would be willing to spend that kind of money.

Rice’s profile has continued to increase off the back of a successful Euros with England and now a terrific start to the Premier League season, but Winterburn feels West Ham’s valuation of the midfielder is way off the mark.

“It’s difficult to say what Declan Rice’s price should be, given the economic climate that we are in,” Winterburn told Paddy Power. “Declan Rice isn’t the same price as Harry Kane, who was rumoured to be £150million.

“He is a terrific player but he’s only worth what someone is willing to pay. How can you put a figure on that? Because if West Ham want £120million but a club is not willing to pay that, then he’s going stay at West Ham at least until he lets his contract run down.

“I find it very difficult to understand that £100 million for any player is a snip. But I can understand why Moyes has made those comments [that £100million for Declan Rice is an ‘absolute bargain’].

“It’s so difficult to put a valuation on players because they’re only worth what someone’s willing to pay. And if the buying club is not willing to pay it, then the player ends up staying. We saw that with Harry Kane in the summer and that will come up again, not in January but maybe at the end of the season.

“Declan Rice’s fee will increase, but maybe we should ask David Moyes what the value is if he thinks £100million is cheap. They’ll be looking at £120million or £130million, which is just an obscene amount of money.”
