Saint-Maximin stars as Newcastle and Leeds play out entertaining draw
Allan Saint-Maximin bagged his second goal of the season as Newcastle frustrated Leeds with a 1-1 draw at St James’ Park.
Brazilian winger Raphinha opened the scoring for Leeds in the 13th minute. He whipped in a cross from deep which was cleverly dummied by Rodrigo, allowing it to go past Karl Darlow and into the far corner.
Miguel Almiron then dragged a shot wide before Joelinton had a great chance to equalise. Saint-Maximin beat Liam Cooper on the right flank before sending in a cross. It fell to Joelinton at the back post, who should have scored but only managed to hit the ball into Illan Meslier’s feet.
Newcastle fans eventually had something to celebrate in the 44th minute. Joelinton played in Saint-Maximin, who rounded multiple defenders and proceeded to beat Meslier with a low drive.
“It reminds me of that goal George Best scored all those years ago!”
Would you listen to that roar!

The second half was less energetic, although there were still a few notable chances. A cross from Whites debutant Daniel James came off the head of Jamaal Lascelles, forcing Darlow to claw the ball away.
Saint-Maximin then fired a left-footed shot towards Meslier’s near post, which was put out for a corner by the Frenchman.
