Lautaro Martinez is set to see his wages triple as a result of keeping his promise of turning down Tottenham Hotspur this summer, according to reports.

Martinez was a major target for Tottenham in the summer transfer window as they sought a new striker. Whether to replace Harry Kane or play alongside him, the Inter Milan forward was seen as an ideal target. Ultimately, Kane stayed with Spurs – but Martinez remained where he was too.

Tottenham were unable to find any other new striker in what remained of the summer. Therefore, they will be hoping Kane can carry the workload himself, with some help from Son Heung-min if needed. And it seems any future hopes they have of signing Martinez in a different transfer window are over.

A new contract with Inter has been mooted for a while for the Argentina international. The situation seems to be accelerating, with Calciomercato now claiming he will become their highest-paid player with a new, five-year contract.

Martinez is still on the original contract he signed when joining Inter in 2018 from Racing. His profile has increased vastly since then, so he will be rewarded accordingly. In fact, his wages will multiply threefold.

Furthermore, the €111m release clause in his contract will disappear, allowing Inter to hold firm over their own price if anyone comes calling in future.

But Martinez promised them he would stay this summer and stayed true to his word. So he could remain at San Siro for many more years.

Inter refused an offer worth an initial €70m from Tottenham for Martinez this summer. The fee could have also increased by €10m easy-to-achieve bonuses and €10m more complicated ones.

Although they are not out of their financial issues entirely, they feel confident enough to be able to tie down Martinez to a better salary.

Club CEO Beppe Marotta has confirmed all is going smoothly with regards to a new contract.

“We are progressing well, as with others too,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “There aren’t any big problems in that sense.”

Inter CEO did not want defeatist attitude

In staying, Martinez will form part of a new-look frontline in the black and blue shirt. While they were able to keep him, Inter had to sell Romelu Lukaku to his former club Chelsea this summer to bring in some much-needed cash.

They proceeded to replace him with former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko, who joined from Roma. In addition, they made another signing from the capital city, reuniting coach Simone Inzaghi with Lazio forward Joaquin Correa.

Inter have earned praise for the way they dealt with the loss of key figures such as Lukaku, Achraf Hakimi and coach Antonio Conte this summer.

“We had to act quickly when faced with the problems that emerged, that is part of the game,” Marotta explained.

“If there is a strong team behind the scenes, then big problems can be made to seem small. I have to say that I have excellent collaborators like Piero Ausilio and Dario Baccin, but the whole staff in general is strong.

“We brought people together during a situation that to others seemed to be on the verge of being defeatist.”
