Ancelotti asks Everton to repeat transfer strategy in raid for Tottenham man
Gareth Bale has emerged as a shock transfer target for Everton as doubts about his future continue, according to a Spanish journalist.
Bale is spending the season on loan at Tottenham from Real Madrid. When he left Spurs for the Spanish capital in 2013 he was the most expensive player ever, but he has suffered a downturn in fortunes in recent years. Since returning to north London, he has endured further mixed fortunes.
The Wales winger sent a reminder of his quality with a hat-trick against Sheffield United at the weekend. It took his tally up to 14 goals for the season.
In the aftermath, claims arose that Daniel Levy would be willing to let Bale stay at the club if Tottenham’s next head coach wanted to keep him. However, doubts remain about where he will be playing next season.
Other sources are less confident that Tottenham will try to re-sign him permanently. Hence, he could return to Madrid for the final year of his contract there.
But if he is not content sitting on the bench, he might have to find a new home. And that may lead him back to the Premier League.
According to Eduardo Inda, speaking on El Chiringuito, Everton are contenders to sign Bale if he does not stay with Tottenham.
The Toffees established contact with Madrid last summer when they signed James Rodriguez on a free transfer. Now, they apparently want to take Bale on the same terms.
Inda claimed (as translated by Sport Witness): “Ancelotti has asked for Bale, a player he always loved when they played together at Real Madrid. He wants to take him to Everton.”
It is not clear if Madrid would allow Bale to leave for free, or if Everton would be able to afford the winger’s wages.
However, as seen with the likes of Rodriguez, they are keen to make high-profile signings as they look to build on from a promising season.
Bale explains recent revival
After his hat-trick at the weekend, Bale insisted he just needed regular gametime to rediscover his best form.
“It’s always nice to get another hat-trick and another match ball,” he told Sky Sports on Sunday.
“I remember my last hat-trick – Villa away I think. It was a while ago and it’s nice to get a hat-trick, but more importantly it’s three points for the team and we move on to the next one.
“Winning always makes everyone happy and gives a winning mentality to the dressing room. It’s not going to happen overnight but I feel like we’re taking a step in the right direction.
“I’m feeling good. As I’ve said before I just needed to play games and get a run of games and I’m doing that now, so I’m happy and when I’m happy I normally play well.”
